USDA-ARS Research Molecular Nematologist Xiaohong Wang is a Principal Investigator on the GLOBAL Project.

Dr. Wang leads the only research program in the U.S. that has hands-on experience and extensive expertise in the biology, resistance breeding, and management of the potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis (a.k.a. golden nematode) and is the chair of the golden nematode technical workgroup. Dr. Wang’s research focuses include: 1) Understanding the molecular mechanisms of nematode parasitism with a special emphasis on the interaction between potato and potato cyst nematodes (G. rostochiensis and G. pallida) and 2) Using host resistance for nematode control. Dr. Wang collaborates with a variety of potato breeding programs in the U.S. and Canada and contributes to the development and release of golden nematode resistant potato varieties. Her research program also provides scientific and technical expertise to support the USDA-APHIS and NYSDAM (New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets) golden nematode quarantine program in New York State. Dr. Wang received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, in 1995. She joined USDA-ARS in 2006 and has been affiliated with Cornell University since 2004.
